![]() | 307 | I've known for forever now that 面白い in Japanese language has 2 main meanings; 1. interesting 2. funny Whenever I want to say that something is interesting, it is easy enough, just say "This is [omoshiroi]", however, when I wish to say that something is funny I find it difficult to communicate that. If I want to make a comment on something that I think is funny and I say "This is [omoshiroi]", I feel like it could just as easily be interpreted as me saying "This is interesting" rather than "This is funny". I've yet to find a way to clearly express myself in Japanese when I want to say that something is funny, it's quite frustrating. | 2026-05-09 13:17:49 |
| 308 | I would not be surprised if there is some unwritten rule which everyone just understands intuitively about when it means funny and when it means interesting. I have not seen anything about it myself, other than the context. The lecture is interesting, the standup is funny. | 2026-05-10 02:44:00 |
| 309 | >>308; If there's an unwritten rule, I wish someone would write it out... I thought a few times it might have something to do with pronounciation or the tone, but then that doesn't translate into text at all. Guess I need to watch 1000 more hours of anime without subtitles to get a grasp. | 2026-05-10 12:21:07 |
